ivory opera passes

Elizabeth Taylor’s jewels are being auctioned. Among the glitz is a gold necklace whose links hold antique ivory opera tokens. Edith Head bequeathed the necklace to Taylor. Christie’s estimates the necklace will sell for $1,500 to $2,000. This has to be a typo, as the tokens I found pics of online have price tags in the neighborhood of £500. I think it will go for $15,000 to $20,000.

Rich and important people carried these permanent box-seat tickets.

  1. I actually went to the preview of the Liz Taylor Auction at Christie's in NYC...beyond fabulous!! This particular necklace was displayed in a huge, upright case with scads of other items, not necessarily "showcased" by any means compared to the other pieces. Having never seen anything like it, and never having even known such passes existed, I was instantly intrigued. "This is something special," I thought. I even dared to HOPE that others wouldn't realize how special this piece was! My hopes were dashed, as this piece ultimately sold for a staggering $314,500. Sigh....
